Sligo Live Song Contest - Y Tunes

Are you our 21st century wandering Angus? Sligo Live is searching for a song inspired by the words or literary images of WB Yeats and offering a winning prize of €500 and a performance at this year’s festival.

For a century Yeats has inspired musicians to song from traditional airs such as Down by the Sally Gardens to more recent interpretations as in the very successful Waterboys’ An Appointment with Mr Yeats. Sligo Live are now continuing this tradition with a novel twist by holding a song writing contest in his honour called Y Tunes. To quote Yeats "the world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper" so start a fire in your head and get composing your own Y Tune.

Y Tunes is an open competition for songwriters/composers/performers to write and produce an original song/composition inspired by or based on an element in the words and works of W B Yeats; drawing on a complete work, lyrics, chorus or refrain. The winning entry will get a prize of €500 and a performance at this year’s Sligo Live Festival. Runners up may also get a chance to perform at the festival if so recommended by our distinguished adjudicators; Paul Brady, Philip Chevron and Patrick McCabe.

The format of the competition is very flexible and the only condition is that a Yeatsian connection/reference will be obvious in the composition. The contest is open to all types of song, in any style - folk, country, pop, rock, reggae etc. Further information and rules can be found by downloading the application form at the bottom of this page. You can also follow Y Tunes on Facebook and Twitter or by emailing jodea@live.ie.

Y Tunes is part of an imaginative new spoken word strand at the Sligo Live Festival this year called Under Bare Ben Bulben Head. The song must be an original work written (in English or Irish) by the entering composer. Songwriters may only enter one song for consideration. Songs, typically should be about 3 minutes long (5 maximum) and submitted in CD and MP3 format before Wednesday Oct 12th 2011. All entries should be addressed to Y Tunes Song Contest, Sligo Live, The Model, The Mall, Sligo.
