Bio - Marit and Rona

Marit Fält and Rona Wilkie burst onto the scene as an exciting and innovative new duo which explores the Scottish and Scandinavian traditions. They won a Danny Kyle Award at Celtic Connections 2012 and Rona went onto be crowned the BBC Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year in the same week.

Rona is an exceptional fiddle player and Gaelic singer from the Highlands, She is at the forefront of the wave of players embracing the rhythmic capacities of the fiddle through her extensive use of chopping and other accompaniment techniques. Rona gets great drive behind her playing, but also has the sensitivity to tease the beauty out of slower airs.

Marit is a hugely dynamic and inventive Låtmandola and cittern player from Norway, of Swedish parents. She captures both the elegance and raw beauty of Norwegian and Swedish traditional music whilst bringing a great rhythmic intensity to her approach to Scottish music. Together, they complement each other, bringing a new perspective on traditional music from both sides of the North Sea.

Rob Adams, The Herald: “beautiful poise, control and expression”

Ian Carr on Marit: “Energy, inventiveness and taste!”

Maeve Mackinnon “Blending innovation with her West Coast traditional roots, fiddler Rona Wilkie is definitely one to watch this year”
