FIDDLER OF DOONEY
FIDDLER OF DOONEY 2016
Sligo Live and CCE Sligo Town branch host the Fiddler of Dooney Competition
over the October Bank holiday Weekend. The competition , inaugurated in 1965 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of W B Yeats’s birth, is 51 years old this year. It was inspired by his poem of the same name.
It is one of the most prestigious instrumental competitions in the tradition. Previous winners include Matt Cranitch, Cathal Hayden , Liz Kane, Paddy Glacken, Bird Harper and Antoin MacGabhann.
Since Sligo Live joined Sligo Town CCE in hosting the competition in 2006, the winners have been Tara Breen, Laura Beagan, Bronwyn Power, Aoife Ni Bhrion, Rhona Lynch, Niall Murphy, Lucia McPartlin, Lydia Warnock and Darragh Curtain. Winners have come from all over the country and from traditional musicians based overseas. Competitors need not be tied to any rigid formula or to play in a Sligo style with its infectious lift. Music lovers, competitors and their families are promised a brilliant weekend of music and hospitality in Sligo. The timing is excellent as the bank holiday weekend is the beginning of the school mid-term break. Full information and an entry form is provided HERE
at 11.00am and the SENIOR is on SUNDAY 30th at 2.00 pm
